Hi, my name’s Kar and I sing honest songs for fragile people.
Through unguarded lyrics and delicate Scottish vocals, my aim is to bring you hope and comfort amid the challenges and vulnerabilities of life. I play lots of instruments but my favourite is the acoustic guitar. I am happiest when sat in a quiet room, at a clear desk, writing lyrics.
I grew up in a musical household in Dundee, Scotland. I played in orchestras, brass bands and ensembles of seemingly-random combinations of instruments. I moved north to Aberdeen and threw myself into the loving arms of indie-pop: writing songs and playing electric guitar with my friends in a series of bands including The Red Faces, The Fringes and The Terry Stamps.
I was a member of critically-acclaimed indie miserablists The Scottish Enlightenment, playing bass and cornet. Highlights included supporting Idlewild; appearing in the Eyes video on MTV2 and VH1; and providing backing vocals for the celebrated St Thomas album.
Moving to the sunny seaside town of Bournemouth, I joined The Burrow Collective. I loved playing alongside local legends Powdered Cows and Zaardvark in award-winning venues 60 Million Postcards and Chaplins & Cellar Bar.
My proudest moment was completing my album 'Protagonist'. The album features synth and electric guitar-driven alt-pop songs as well as acoustic songs with stark production.
I’m now settled in Manchester in the north of England. I release my single ‘Freehand’ in Spring 2020, a song about writing. 'The Wonders and the Terrors', a song about rolling news and social media is out on 23rd October 2020.
“…what I’m saying is, have a listen to my friend Kar Stanton’s new album, Protagonist. It’s beautiful. Eyes closed, we shall overcome, step away from the keyboard, real life, labour of love, start to finish beautiful. If you like that sort of thing.” - Craig Rennie, Musician & Journalist
“Kar Stanton has a distinctive style, by turns haunting and soothing, memorable and challenging.” - Paul Canon Harris, Poet & Broadcaster
“A lovely minimal listen - at times vocally reminiscent of a young Suzanne Vega - New Year & In The Darkness are instant faves…” - Conrad Barr, Solid Air, Moonbeams, Chaplins & Cellar Bar
